Center Pivot Inspection From the Air in the Sulphur Springs Valley

A blocked nozzle, a leaning tower or a wheel track cutting a rut does not announce itself from the pickup. On 108,237 irrigated acres in a basin under an AMA, uniformity is now a compliance issue as well as an agronomic one.

There are 108,237 irrigated acres in Cochise County across roughly a thousand farms, and a very large share of it turns under a pivot. If you farm here you already know the two things that changed recently: the Willcox AMA was designated in January 2025, and in January 2026 the state reached an $11 million groundwater settlement with Riverview that includes retiring 2,000 acres of irrigated ground over twelve years and putting in low-energy precision irrigation and pivot automation.

Whatever anyone's view of either, the direction is not ambiguous. Water applied per acre is now something that gets looked at. And the cheapest water you will ever save is the water you are currently putting somewhere it does not do any good.

That is what this is about. Not compliance paperwork — the mechanical, findable inefficiency sitting in a machine you drive past every day.

What a pivot problem looks like from 300 feet

The reason aerial works on pivots is that a pivot writes its own faults onto the crop. The machine is a circle, the failures are radial or angular, and the pattern is legible from above in a way it simply is not from the ground.

Almost all of those are cheap to fix and expensive to leave. A single failed nozzle package on an outer span is a large area — the outer spans cover most of the acres — and it typically costs a couple of hundred dollars in parts against a yield hit across a meaningful slice of the circle.

The infrastructure pass, which is half the value

Beyond the crop pattern, a flight documents the machine and the plumbing:

  • Tower alignment down the length of the machine — leaning towers and drive train problems visible before they stop the pivot mid-season.
  • Wheel track condition, including where a rut is deep enough to be a stuck-machine risk after the first monsoon cell.
  • Standing water and ponding, which tells you where you are over-applying and where the soil will not take it.
  • Leaks at the pivot point and along the mainline, which are obvious from above and easy to miss on the ground.
  • Wellheads, tanks, meters and pump houses, dated and located.
  • Erosion and washes cutting into the field edge, which move every monsoon.

None of this is exotic. It is a walk-around you would do if you had time to walk 130 acres, from an angle that shows the whole thing at once.

Being honest about the sensor

We fly RGB, not multispectral

We currently fly high-resolution visible-light imagery, which produces vigour indices derived from RGB. That is genuinely good at everything on the list above — the patterns are large, high-contrast and structural.

It is not NDVI. NDVI requires a near-infrared band and we do not have a near-infrared sensor. We would rather say that than let the acronym do work it has not earned. Where RGB is weaker is early-stage crop stress before it becomes visible, and subtle nitrogen or water status differences within an otherwise healthy stand.

A multispectral sensor is in the plan. When it lands we will say so on this page, plainly, and not before.

If what you need today is true NDVI for a variable-rate prescription, we will tell you that and point you at someone who has the sensor. If what you need is to know which of your pivots has a nozzle problem and where the ruts are, we can do that now and the RGB is sufficient for it.

Timing: when to fly a pivot

Pre-season, before green-up. The bare-ground pass. Best time to see track condition, alignment, erosion and infrastructure without the crop hiding it. Also the moment fixes are cheapest, because the machine is not running.

Early canopy closure. The best window for uniformity. Once the crop has enough biomass to express water differences but before it fully closes, application problems are at their most visible.

Mid-season at peak. The maximum-contrast pass. This is where a blocked span or a pressure wedge is unmistakable.

Post-harvest. Closes the year's record and catches damage before the machine sits over winter.

Time of day matters more than people expect. Mid-morning through early afternoon on a clear day gives even illumination without hard shadow from the pivot structure itself. And in this valley from mid-June onward, morning is the only reliable window anyway — convective build-up and outflow winds make afternoons a gamble.

The compliance dimension, briefly

Inside the Willcox AMA, irrigation is capped to acreage legally irrigated in the five years before 23 October 2024, measuring devices are required on non-exempt wells, and annual withdrawal reports are due 31 March every year indefinitely.

An aerial map is evidence, not a legal determination. It does not establish a right and it does not satisfy a reporting obligation. What it does is create a dated, georeferenced, measurable record of what was under irrigation on a given day — which is the kind of thing that is impossible to reconstruct after the fact and very useful to have when a question arises five years out.

Flown the same way at the same points in the season, year over year, that record becomes an archive. We wrote about the documentation side of the AMA separately. For anything touching your legal position, talk to a water attorney. We fly cameras.

What it costs

Minimum call-out is $375 and covers up to 40 acres. Above that it is $8/acre to 160 acres, $5/acre to 500, $3/acre beyond. A standard 130-acre quarter-section pivot therefore lands around $700 for a single scan.

Two things bring that down substantially:

Season subscription. Six scans from pre-season to post-harvest carries a 25% reduction, billed monthly March through October. This is the version we recommend, because a single scan tells you the state of things and a series tells you what is changing.

Route days. If we can cluster two or three operations into one loop through the valley it comes down to $295 each. If you and your neighbours all have pivots and all want them looked at, say so and we will schedule you together.

Airspace, which is the easy part here

The valley floor is Class G. No LAANC, no authorization, no waiting — a flight can happen the week you ask for it. That is not true for growers near Sierra Vista and it is not true in the Tucson metro, and it is one of the few genuine advantages of farming in a place this empty.
